City street crews struggle through the heat

The summer heat wave continues, and for Toledo street crews their task is repairing roads and trying not to allow the weather conditions to slow them down.

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The summer heat wave continues, and for Toledo street crews their task is repairing roads and trying not to allow the weather conditions to slow them down.

"What you try to do you drink plenty of water and if you feel kind of weak I tell the guys go off to the side get a glass of water and try to overcome," said Ed Garcia, a street department worker for 24 years.

Garcia keeps a close tab on what he eats when it's this hot.

"Actually it does affect you, a big meal isn't good on a day like this, try to eat light," said Garcia.

Sunscreen is another must. Crews will also get an early start on Thursday as temperatures are expected to climb into triple digits.

"We're going to start a shift at 6 o'clock in the morning, we're going to come in that way we get our 8 hours in," said Garcia.

While workers are trying to prevent their bodies from breaking down, the extreme heat also creates potential for street conditions to break down.

"That's a big factor because we have a lot of streets that will heave," said Garcia.
