Medical breakthroughs: Right sunglasses decrease chances of eye damage

TOLEDO (WTOL) - The sun's damaging rays are not only a threat to your skin, but also to your eyes. Choosing the right sunglasses can decrease your chances of developing several eye diseases.

Dr. Paul Rychwalski, an ophthalmologist at Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute, said it's important to look for sunglasses that have a sticker that says it blocks UVA and UVB rays.

He said overexposure to the sun's rays can cause the formation of diseases, including cataracts and macular degeneration.

If it's the cost that worries you, Rychwalski says you don't have to spend a lot of money to get the protection you need.

"We may think we're protected by paying a lot for sunglasses, but most of that is just for fashion or the name on the side of them," Rychwalski said. "You can get very good sunglasses with good UV protection and not really break the bank."

He says there are also sunglasses for different times of the day or based on the activity you're doing.
