Ohio Dept. of Health launches "BeachGuard" website

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Department of Health says a new "BeachGuard" website will allow visitors to learn whether an advisory on bacteria or algae has been posted at any beaches monitored by the state.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the department tests 62 Lake Erie beaches and inland lake beaches in state parks for E. coli bacteria, an indicator of pollution that could be harmful to swimmers. Advisories are posted if levels exceed recreational standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The state also posts advisories when unsafe levels of cyanobacteria - known as blue green algae - are found at beaches.

The findings are being posted at the new site, www.odh.ohio.gov/healthybeaches, funded with a grant from the U.S. EPA.
