Raceway Park future in Toledo doubted after video slots deal

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The deal announced by Ohio Governor John Kasich to allow video slots at 7 racetracks around the state puts the future of Raceway Park in Toledo in serious doubt.

In February, Penn National Gaming informed the Ohio Racing Commission its intent to ask for a transfer of its license at Raceway Park and transfer operations to a new facility in Youngstown, should VLT's be allowed at Ohio racetracks.

A company spokesman says there's no comment about the Governor's deal, but did indicate what was discussed in February with the ORC is still the company's intent.

Jerry Chabler, a former member of the Ohio Racing Commission, says he'd expect a formal request being filed by Penn National sooner rather than later, and adds he wouldn't bet on another harness racing operation moving into Raceway Park should a Penn National transfer be granted,

"The highest and best use for that would not be slots or horse racing because of the fact the casino is located here in Toledo," said Chabler.

Councilwoman Lindsay Webb is concerned about the site being abandoned,

"If the racing commission approves Penn National's desire to move out of the Toledo area, I would hope Penn National would work with the administration to ready the site for redevelopment, for appropriate redevelopment," said Webb.
