Toledo Zoo celebrating birth of a new elephant

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The Toledo Zoo is celebrating the birth of a new elephant.

Renee the elephant gave birth to a male baby African elephant on Friday at around 11:28 p.m..

The unnamed calf weighed in at about 200 pounds.

He was conceived in August of 2009 through artificial insemination. The procedure was performed by Elephant Reproductive Specialist Dr. Dennis Schmitt and the Toledo Zoo animal care team.

The zoo staff is saying that he appears to be healthy, but are remaining cautiously optimistic.

"With the major hurdle of the birth behind us, there are still many critical milestones ahead for Renee and her calf, including bonding, successful nursing, introduction to the other Toledo Zoo elephants, the one-year mark, and weaning," said Dr. Chris Hanley, Toledo Zoo Chief Veterinarian .

The staff say mother and calf will continue to be monitored around the clock and will not be displayed they feel they are ready for public viewing
