Port Authority to ask for more Jeep clean-up funds

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Environmental clean-up is underway at the Overland Industrial Park, the former home of Jeep in Toledo.

$1.3 million in federal funding and $340,000 from the City of Toledo has been secured, and later this month the Toledo-Lucas Port Authority will ask the Clean Ohio Council for $4.5 million to complete that clean up.

"Our goal at the end of the day is maximize the economic impact of the project. We want to put as many square feet as possible on the site for industrial development to create as many jobs as possible," said Matt Sapara, coordinator of the project for the Port Authority.

With its close proximity to Chrysler's Toledo Assembly Complex, the hope is auto suppliers will find that land attractive.

"We don't have another site like it within the City of Toledo," said Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken.

A land use concept plan will be unveiled in a few weeks in hopes of generating interest from businesses.
