Church on Strayer Easter Sunday

MAUMEE, OH (WTOL) - The Church on Strayer in Maumee celebrates Easter in a unique way.  Every year, they have the Easter Egg Drop, a different spin on an easter egg hunt.

There are five Easter services throughout the weekend, and after each, a helicopter swings by overhead, and drops eggs onto a field for kids to grab.  A total of 75,000 eggs were dropped this weekend, all filled with toys, cash and candy.

"I think it's awesome, I have never seen anything like it," said church-goer Dwight Leggett.

"We had so much fun, what a joyous experience, even in the rain!" said Penelope Sanford, another church member.

The Easter Egg Drop is not the only thing that makes the Church on Strayer's Easter celebration unique.  The church is receiving national attention for giving away a home this year.

One lucky and needy family will be the recipient of a 1,250 square foot home built by church volunteers.  Pastor Tony Scott purposely chose Easter for the home giveaway because, "Easter is about a sacrifice, Jesus Christ gave us the ultimate sacrifice of his life, and we wanted to make a sacrifice, giving something like a house."  He says that it is a huge sacrifice for the church.

Every applicant just had to attend one of the Easter services to apply for the house.  Each family will be considered, there is not a random selection or drawing out of a hat.  A family has to meet a list of qualifications including having a stable job for at least a year, being a Lucas or Sandusky County resident, be a U.S. citizen, and be willing to help build the house for at least 200 to 300 hours.

A panel will decide the receiving family in about two weeks.  Pastor Scott says, "We're going to look at every application, every story, because each family on the application will tell a story of why they should get the house."

The home has not yet been constructed, but is slated to be finished in time for the July 4th celebration.
