TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The Registered Nursing program at Owens Community College still is not accredited by the National League of Nursing - a distinction showing four-year universities and employers that Owens students learn under the highest national standards.  Its been working to get it back for almost two years.

"We've taken all the appropriate steps.  We can move as fast as we can," said Renay Scott, Executive Vice-President and Provost, Owens Community College.

The latest steps include, getting the Ohio Board of Nursing's full-approval for five years.

"If we did not have the Ohio Board of  Nursing, we wouldn't have a program," said Scott.

Owens Executive Vice-President Renay Scott says the OBN did not put any clauses in its award.

"I think it speaks to the quality of the program," said Scott.

More than 100 nursing students have joined a consolidation action lawsuit against Owens.  They claim to have either, not been able to get a job, or transfer credits to a four-year institution because of the lack of accreditation.

The attorneys say the OBN award means nothing for them, but for Scott, it means the program now has candidacy to be looked at for accreditation.

After submitting a self-study on the nursing program, the NLANC will check things out for itself during a campus visit.

"Each step that we go affirms that the program is one of quality," said Scott.
