Texting while driving is common, but it is uncommonly dangerous. That's why WTOL 11 and our partners Taylor Automotive Family and AAA/Cell Safety have launched a campaign to get people to promise to stop texting as they drive.

It's called "Put Down the Phone and Make it Home."

Take the pledge.

We wanted to show you how dangerous even a short text message can be.

To text for just 3 seconds at 30 mph, a person would have traveled 135 feet. Our WTOL intern Sarah helped in a demonstration. It takes about 75 feet to recognize the need to stop and then to actually stop. If she were distracted by texting, Sarah could have crashed into 10 cars in that distance.

All that for a message as short as, "Hey, whatchya doin?"

Next time you drive, ask yourself, "Is that worth dying for?"
