WTOL Editorial: Big response to high-speed rail money editorial

By WTOL Vice President and General Manager Bob Chirdon - email

My recent editorial in support of Governor Kasich's decision to refuse the Federal stimulus money for a high speed train project, stimulated a lot of responses. [WTOL Editorial: Kasich was right to turn down high-speed rail money]

In fact, some viewers looked to Amtrack as an example of how wrong it would be to build the high speed train.

Jim hits that nail by saying "why would we, as taxpayers, ever want to support another failing rail system?"

Luthien said: "I've traveled Amtrak.  Half –filled trains, Federal subsidies to keep it moving, that won't yield a decent profit."

Lauralle thought the current idea unworkable: "The system would be way too slow.  If it is not fast, efficient and reasonably priced, people will not use it."

Ben wants the train, he just wants it to go Chicago.

Jasmine wants it to go New York. But the money is only for Ohio.

Tom thinks we should have taken the money just to create the jobs.  Robin likes the project and thinks we will be wishing for the train when gas hits $5 per gallon.

And finally, Jaxon said "Fix the current infrastructure before embarking on a new endeavor."  I'm with you on that one, Jaxon.

And to all of you who took the time to respond, thanks. Keep that feedback train running -- the internet is almost always high speed.
