TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – The latest winter blast has left thousands in the dark in northwest Ohio, particularly in West Toledo. Many residents spent Monday and into Tuesday in the dark.

To help keep them warm, the American Red Cross has set up a shelter at the West Toledo YMCA on Tremainsville Road and they are prepared to stay open as long as they're needed.

Cots are set up for at least 15 people and the displaced residents are getting a warm meal and shelter from the cold.

David Sniadecki's home on Secor Road was 57 degrees inside, when he decided to head to the shelter.

Sniadecki said, "It's chilly. There's no heat or nothing. (Can't see anything) without a flashlight or candle, nothing!"

Frances Clinton brought a book and will watch TV to pass the time at the shelter. When asked if she was relieved the shelter was opened, she said, "Yes, be grateful. Be grateful that Toledo does have things like this."

But Kathy Houstin, on Winona Drive, didn't have that option because her son and daughter have cerebral palsy. The power had been out since 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning and she says Toledo Edison told her that crews might not be able to make repairs and restore the power until Wednesday.

The biggest concern is that there is no electricity to power their oxygen machine.

"If we end up with a seizure we can't run the oxygen machine," she said. And what does she do if that happens? She said, "The only thing I could do is call 911."

In her home, she has a fire burning in the kids' room to take the chill off, but that only goes so far.

The kids' aunt, Debbie O'Leary they can't be in the cold long because they can't fend for themselves you know? They can't get up and move around like we can and they don't stay covered."

Houstin added, "Their food can't even be warmed up. They are on special food, pureed food. I've been trying to give them as many liquids as I can but they are doing without the food that they need."

But just before 11 p.m. on Monday night, the Houstins received something that brightened their day. Their power came back on.
