Folks fuming after AllCare Dental's abrupt closure

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Some of AllCare Dental's patients have been left without services they paid for -- and in some cases their own teeth -- after the national chain abruptly shut down on New Year's Eve.

Several former Toledo patients contacted WTOL's Call 11 For Action line after finding AllCare shuttered when they showed up for their appointments.

Without any warning, all of the dental chain's offices across the U.S. closed, leaving some patients out of thousands. In turns out many people prepaid for dental work that will now likely not be completed.

Customers who called the company's phone number received no response. The company's main website is down, too.

In fact, the only communication from the company is now posted on office doors and online.

The message says the company closed because it was severely cash constrained and had no way to continue to operate. Also, the company says their phone system and patient information computer network remain shut down by an outside provider.

According to the Better Business Bureau's Dick Epstein, former patients may have little recourse.

"We're optimistic that records will be safe, but as for money, you may have lost it all," said Epstein.

AllCare says it is working to transfer dental records and unfinished work to other dentists, but that many patients are likely out of luck.

Earl Egts says he is out of $6,000 and that he doesn't even have his own teeth.

Betty Ford says she is at a loss and does not know what to do. "I have to find somebody who's going to finish this work, so I can be human again [because] I don't feel that way anymore."

The Ohio Attorney General's Office and Ohio State Dental Board say they have been inundated with complaints from AllCare patients.

To file a complaint, call The Ohio Attorney General's Office at 800-282-0515 or The Ohio State Dental Board at 614-466-2580.

If you are a former patient, keep any documentation you have. If you paid with a credit card, you may be able to dispute the charges.
