The most obvious way to avoid overspending is to stick to a budget. If you don't have one already, make a list and stick to it.
Another way to keep spending under control is to buy gifts only with money you have instead of using credit. Store credit cards may offer savings now, but now paying off the balance right away could end up costing you in the long run.
If you do decide to get a store credit card, be sure you know the terms, especially the interest rate.
Gift cards can also be a great way to control spending. Over 100 retailers are participating in National eGift Card Day Thursday, allowing shoppers to send gift cards over e-mail or facebook.
