Guest Editorial: Don't let the tax cut die

By Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop

If you don't think every vote counts, you should have been at the commissioners meeting today. If you were there, you would have seen how one commissioner's vote cost you a $15 million tax cut next year.

I proposed the cut, which would have given the average home owner a $60 break, and couldn't get either Pete Gerken or Tina Skeldon-Wozniak to go along with it.

Mind you, the cut wouldn't have ended one service. Instead, it would draw down large reserve funds at two taxpayer-funded county agencies.

In this economy, you would think this tax cut would be common sense. My term ends in a month. It's up to you to not let this issue die. We need all the help we can to get our community moving again, and a $15 million tax cut is a great place to start.

The recent decision of ProMedica's Board of Trustees to enter into a transfer agreement with Capital Care Network, Toledo's last remaining abortion facility, just doesn't make sense.
