WTOL Editorial: Parents should have stepped in before Bellevue dance

By WTOL Vice President and General Manager Bob Chirdon - email

The behavior of teenagers has always caused parents angst.

This week, the hottest media story on teenagers out of control is all about dirty dancing in high school.

In truth, the dancing friction at high schools is one of those things that parents would rather not know about.

I suspect it is something they would really rather never see. But with video phones, YouTube and Facebook, there just aren't many secrets anymore.

The latest video tells a story that has parents shocked and angry.

I get that, but let's face it. If you let your daughter go out of the house with that skimpy dress on, don't be surprised if someone takes her picture. Particularly if she's bumping and grinding on the dance floor.

The answer is for parents to impose rules and restrictions on their kids' clothing and behavior.

But that is hard and unpopular work. And if you don't want to do it, it's unfair to expect a school administrator to do it for you. Parents, even with teenagers, you are still the boss. Make the rules.

The recent decision of ProMedica's Board of Trustees to enter into a transfer agreement with Capital Care Network, Toledo's last remaining abortion facility, just doesn't make sense.
