Surgical Options:

The Center for Weight Loss Surgery (CWLS) at Wood County Hospital offers the most options for bariatric surgery in Northwest Ohio. We perform four laparoscopic or minimal invasive bariatric surgical procedures which include:

  • The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small pouch out of the uppermost part of the stomach and also bypasses part of the small intestine. This causes the patient to eat less and also to absorb less of the food eaten which reduces caloric intake.
  • The Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (LapBand and Realize Band) involves placing an adjustable silicone band around the top of the stomach which is connected to a port under the skin. This creates a smaller upper stomach pouch in which food is held which restricts the amount of food one can eat at one time. The silicone band can be adjusted after surgery with injections of sterile fluid into the port. The digestive process remains unchanged as there is no alteration of the small bowel.
  • The Sleeve Gastrectomy removes part of the stomach, creating a long narrow stomach. The removal of the unused portion of the stomach controls the amount of hormones released into the body that control hunger.
  • The Biliopancreatic Diversion with a Duodenal Switch also removes a portion of the stomach. In addition, a long segment of the small intestine is bypassed, which reduces the amount of food absorbed in the intestinal tract. This surgery generally yields the most significant weight-loss resulting in the reduction of major health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. It usually is reserved for the more extreme bariatric cases.
  • Revisional surgery options for previous surgeries are also performed for patients who qualify medically.
