New nursing head at Owens says degrees are legitimate

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Ruth Ankele is beginning the school year as the new head of the Nursing Program at Owens Community College.

The program has had significant setbacks in the past year that include losing a national accreditation that was followed with a lawsuit by students.

Ankele says she's ready for the challenge. She comes from the University of Toledo with more than 20 years experience in nursing education. Most recently, she served as the coordinator of the Associate Degree program.

While Ankele is working hard to get the accreditation back from the National League of Nursing (NLN), she assures students the degrees are just as valuable without it. "Our accreditation with the NLN, although it is important and we do want this, it isn't a necessity," she said.

Instead, accreditation with the Ohio Board of Nursing is the essential one, Ankele says, and that accreditation was never in question. "Our graduates can sit for the national test, and that's paramount."

Some students disagree. The school still faces the lawsuit filed by students who were in the nursing program when it lost the accreditation.

Ankele is working with those students as well. "That's my job -- to kind of calm the waters," she said. "Let them see where they stand, that they will be OK and that we will make this program better."
