WTOL Editorial: Forget Farmer Joe's idea, we have enough farmland

By WTOL Vice President and General Manager Bob Chirdon - email

Toledo City Council Member Joe McNamara suggests the city turn the Marina District property into temporary farmland.

I guess the plan is to let somebody plant something, and then somehow water, fertilize, weed, harvest and eat it.

Really Joe -- have you ever tried to stick a shovel in this stuff?

And, given the potential this property possesses, could you think any smaller than this?

The only seeds we should be planting are the seeds of commerce, not corn.

Commerce that comes from condos, shopping and entertainment. For example, people doing stuff; spending money.

I'm in favor of urban gardens, but I think we better forget Farmer Joe's idea.

We have enough farmland. What we need is funding, lots of it.

So McNamara, if you have an idea about where that funding could come from, we're all ears.

The recent decision of ProMedica's Board of Trustees to enter into a transfer agreement with Capital Care Network, Toledo's last remaining abortion facility, just doesn't make sense.
