TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Congress passed a pool safety act in 2007 that took effect in 2008, but many pool owners remain unaware of it. It requires safety features to be added to all pools.

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act was passed with the goal of preventing accidental drownings at pools across the country.

A major component of the act is the mandate for all public and commercial pools to have anti-entrapment drain covers installed.

Officials for the City of Toledo say city pools have the standards set forth.

Kenyon Ward with Hawaiin Pools says 90 percent of residential pool owners he encounters haven't heard of the law.

Pool companies are required to put them in all new pools. For residential pools installed before 2008, it's up to the home owner to make sure it's up to code.

Rob Wiercinski will have more details in a special report Thursday at 11 p.m. called "Water Hazard."
