TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Doctors learn how to do their jobs in medical school, partly by working on human cadavers. The bodies are people who chose before their deaths to be donated to medical schools like the University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC).

John Kalisz, who died a year ago, was one of those people who wanted to support medical science. His wife, Margaret Kalisz, says John was "funny, teasing, very thoughtful, and courageous because he went through the war." John earned a purple heart as an army sergeant in World War II.

"I do miss his teasing, I do," Margaret said.

Margaret recently attended a memorial service for John and dozens of others who donated their bodies to UTMC.

Connie Harmon also attended the service, and she'll be donating her body as well. "I don't know why more people don't do it." Harmon also says she is surprised when friends ask if it's a creepy thing to do. "I tell them, 'No, it's not," she said.

Officials at the medical school remind anyone interested in having their body donated to medical science need to take care of the paperwork. Many programs, including UTMC's Anatomical Donation program, do not allow a loved one to sign a person up after that person has died.

Watch the featured video for more on the donors and their families as well as from the UTMC students and staff.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round.
