TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Ottawa Hills officer Thomas White was found guilty Friday of felonious assault with a gun specification after shooting a motorcyclist during a traffic stop. The jury deliberated six hours.

White will be sentenced on June 21. He can be sentenced to a maximum of 11 years in prison.

In the five-day trial, White testified he shot Michael McCloskey during a traffic stop, believing McCloskey was reaching for a gun. He said McCloskey did not obey his commands.

McCloskey testified he did not understand White's commands. He was shot in the back and was paralyzed instantly. A gun was not found on McCloskey.

The Village of Ottawa Hills emailed the following statement after the verdict:

On behalf of the Village of Ottawa Hills, it is with regret that we have learned Officer Thomas White was convicted today by a Lucas County jury. We will await the court's imposition of a sentence. We further regret the serious injury that occurred in the early morning of May 23, 2009. We will have no further comment to the media until all of the legal matters arising out of this incident are resolved.

Other iterations included the Blades, the Hornets, the Goaldiggers and the Storm. For a short time, in 1949-50, the team was actually called the Toledo Buckeyes.
