Pit bull brou-ha-ha enters new phase

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The debate over pit bulls is taking center stage with the Lucas County commissioners. And there is just one talking point: the dog warden's ability to make pit bull policy.

Commissioner Ben Konop sought approval of a resolution to give Toledo Dog Warden Julie Lyle the ability to make policy within her first 30 days on the job, especially when it comes to deciding which dogs are put down and which dogs are saved.

That resolution was tabled.

While commissioners Pete Gerken and Tina Skeldon-Wozniak didn't support the measure, they say the county is committed to adopting more dogs, including pit bull dogs, and euthanizing fewer dogs.

County Administrator Peter Ujvagi says the dog warden is already making those decisions on a daily basis. "The dogs that we euthanized on Friday and dogs euthanized this morning were all decisions made by Julie Lyle."

Another development regarding pit bulls: Thursday, the Toledo Area Humane Society board will vote on whether or not to change its adoption policy to include the direct adoptions of pit bulls. They say their current adoption policy prohibits them from doing direct adoption of pit bulls.
