WTOL Editorial: Blue flu inexcusable

More than 70 Toledo police officers came down with the blue flu Tuesday.

Some of them called in sick for the Monday overnight shift. Several more joined the unofficial protest on Tuesday.

There is also talk of a strike.

Now, I realize that giving back benefits you thought were guaranteed is difficult to swallow.  But a lot of us in cities and businesses all over America have done just that in the past 16 months.

I don't think any of us liked it. I also don't think many of us would still be employed if we decided to collectively not show up for work.

This is the wrong tactic at the wrong time in the wrong city.

Maybe 25 years ago many of the people in northwest Ohio would have been sympathetic. But this is a different time and a much different economic crisis.

I hope the sick officers get better in a hurry.

If not, they just might get some medicine that is a whole lot tougher to swallow than benefit concessions.
