WTOL Editorial: Mayor Bell deserves our support

Mayor Mike Bell is stepping up and taking the heat from the unions, city council and a bunch of others as he tries to narrow this budget gap.

Because he is willing to lay off workers, it looks like he may get some concessions from both the police and firefighters.

That's long overdue. Sharing the cost of pensions and healthcare is a fact of life for most employees and it's time for that discussion to be over.

I hope commons sense prevails and the layoffs are avoided.

Mayor Bell says that everyone needs to share some of the pain. He is demonstrating the courage of his convictions by being transparent and straightforward.

This is a difficult situation. The mayor is trying, and I salute him for that. I just wonder if it all isn't too little, too late.

The recent decision of ProMedica's Board of Trustees to enter into a transfer agreement with Capital Care Network, Toledo's last remaining abortion facility, just doesn't make sense.
