DEARBORN, MI (WTOL) - Dearborn area teens who visit Fairlane Town Center say the curfew is unfair, but mall officials say a 5 p.m. adult supervision policy was necessary.

They implemented the policy "in order to make sure the people that were coming to the shopping center were here for the right reasons and that they were all safe and well managed," said Darla Bowen with Fairlane Towne Center.

The only exception is for teens who work at the mall.

Toledo safety officials have recommended a policy of not allowing unsupervised teens at Westfield Franklin Park at all. Mall shoppers, however, wonder how the policy would be enforced.

Fairlane officials say their strategy is to train their officers in both mall security and customer service. "It isn't as if you were walking up to say, 'I need to see your ID,'" Bowen said.  "The first general reaction that they always have is a very friendly one in the nature of, 'Are you aware of our adult supervision policy?'

While teens we spoke with weren't fans of the policy, some Dearborn shoppers gave it positive reviews. "I love it. They need to keep it going to keep a lot of the kids out of trouble and keep the parents involved," said one shopper.

Another shopper says it's obvious when the policy begins. It is announced over the mall speaker each day when unsupervised mall time is over, and the shopper says all the teens are gone within 30 minutes.

Fairlane officials say they got input from the entire community before they came up with the policy. They believe it's been a huge success for people in the area as well as business in the mall.
