WTOL Editorial: Asian carp threat is real

The invasive Asian carp have the potential to devastate the $7 billion fishing Great Lakes fishing industry. These voracious fish grow to lengths of more than 4 feet and weigh up to 100 pounds.

The carp are now in the Illinois River that flows into Lake Michigan, which becomes a portal to disaster.

They eat plankton and vegetation at a frightening rate, which denies food to foraging fish that sport fish feed upon.

They also disrupt spawning beds, which means fewer fish will be hatched. Also these fish leap out of the water when the surface is disturbed and have even crashed into boaters and jet skiers.

The Asian carp threat is real. If we don't put pressure right now on the EPA and other government organizations, it may soon be too late.

Once these carp get into the Great Lakes, the worst case scenario is ugly and just about irreversible.

If you care about the fragile ecosystem of the Great Lakes, call your congressional representative and tell them to get involved and to protect our precious water.
