PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP (WTOL) - As Owens Community College takes steps to regain its national nursing accreditation, students want to know how this could have happened.

"I've heard they've had since June of 2007 to get their stuff together. I mean, it's 2009. Why does it take so long," asked student Jasmin Gray.

Outrage and questions by nursing students has driven an internal inquiry at Owens to determine how the school lost its accreditation from the National League of Nursing.

Vice Provost Dr. Renay Scott said the inquiry will focus on finding out who was responsible for losing the accreditation and what entities were responsible for the accrediting process. She said they'll focus on how the process can be improved and any other issues that were not addressed.

Changes are already beginning. The Nursing Department is becoming its own school, breaking away from the School of Health Sciences. The new Owens School of Nursing will be headed by Dawn Wetmore, who will take the helm before Christmas. The school will move to the former Penta campus.

"It concentrates resources. It gives them focus. It gives them an opportunity to have a leader that has nursing background," said Scott.

Students, handpicked by the school to talk, say they're confident Owens will regain its standing by the time they graduate.

"I'm still going to graduate in six months. I'm still going to take my boards and, hopefully, pass them and become an RN," said student Ashley Leonard.
