WTOL Editorial: Parents, teach your kids to respect others

This past week a band of hoodlums brought unwanted national scorn upon Toledo. I'm talking about that idiotic shootout in a local bar on Friday night.

While these morons fired guns blindly across an empty barroom, the cameras were running.  And now Toledo is a laughing stock on YouTube and CNN and who knows where else.

In some quarters this non-event is used as an excuse to call for more police on the street.  Although I am all for beefing up the street presence for cops, let's be honest: There is no way 20 or 30 or even 100 more cops could have prevented this.

The best prevention is to close the places where this type of sociopathic behavior occurs -- and to arrest as many of these cowards as possible.

It's unfortunate that on a week when the new arena should be the positive story for Toledo, these losers got so much attention. They probably think they look bad and can't wait to do it again.

Toledo does need more cops, but what we really need are more parents who take the time to teach their children about the basic rules of society and respect for human life.
