CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A woman in east Charlotte has more than 100 pets and police have given her 10 days to become compliant.
The woman, Debbie Faraone, lives along the 700 block of Eastway Drive. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, she has 119 cats and dogs.
"It's a lot of animals for one place." Mecklenburg Co. Animal control Melissa Knicely said.
Faraone said the reason why she has so many animals is because she rescues them.
"Instead of ministering to people, I minister to animals." Debbie Faraone said.
WBTV spoke with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department's Animal Control Division on Tuesday.
Agents say Faraone is breaking the law because she has no license to run an animal shelter.
Animal control officers plan to return to the woman's home in a few days to make sure no more animals have been added.
"We're going to do our best to comply." Faraone said.
Police say the animals are not living in deplorable conditions. But they gave her some recommendations to improve the conditions.
"She has given every indication that she wants to remedy the situation," Knicely said. "So we want to work with her."
There is no fee to apply for an animal shelter license.
The state says finding someone operating a shelter of more than 100 animals is rare.
