ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) - Police in Roseville say at least one burglar broke into a home in the Detroit suburb and killed the family's 6-month-old cat by putting it in the washing machine.

Owner Kimberly Ross says she finds it impossible to understand why someone would commit such an act. She says she got the kitten named Ruby from a friend as a 50th birthday present.

Police say the break-in happened Monday as the family was away.

The Detroit News and WDIV-TV report the home was ransacked and several valuables were taken.

Roseville police Deputy James Berlin tells the Detroit Free Press the cat was put in the washing machine, which then was turned on. The cat died.

Police continue to investigate.
