WTOL Editorial: Let's get our manners back

Holding the door open for women is a common courtesy. It takes very little effort and almost always gets you a smile and a thank-you.

The truth is, this simple act of courtesy and respect is disappearing. Americans are becoming a rude and socially graceless people. This week Kanye West and Serena Williams took rudeness to a whole new level. And neither seems embarrassed nor all that apologetic.

How sad.

Manners and social graces should be learned at an early age. It would be nice if parents taught by example. But how can you teach courtesy if you do not practice it yourself?

And teachers should also accept some responsibility for instilling good manners in elementary schoolchildren.

Just once I want to go out to eat and not see a half-dozen guys sitting around with their hats on, and their legs draped around the chair while supporting themselves with their elbows. I won't even go into the public profanity, since it is now so common it no longer has shock value.

Yes, we are a rude and ignorant people. And we are getting ruder and cruder.

It is not cool and it's not pretty.
