(WTOL) - Summer may not be over, but Toledo Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) isn't waiting for the temperatures to drop to help Lucas County residents save money.

In order to qualify for the program, residents must meet a certain poverty level.

Dyann Otto says she's known about the program but didn't apply until she was hit with several outrageous utility bills. "I'm just grateful that these good people are here and they have the money to do this and it's not costing me anything," she said.

With many more people falling on hard times like Otto, NHS is expecting to help thousands in the Toledo community. A representative from NHS said, "For Lucas County we received 8.1 million, and that is to assist 1,037 homes."

The weatherizing service could save you up to $400.

It's not just the homeowner that benefits. Chris Kozak with Columbia Gas said it is a win-win situation "It's about putting people to work. It's about being green and saving the amount of fossil fuels that we use, so there is a number of different ways that this touches and impacts."

Weatherizing tips

Here are the top three ways the weather channel says to weatherize your home:

1. Get an energy audit

2. Find any leaks

3. Service the heating system

Those services and more are provided by Toledo Neighborhood Housing Services. To see if you qualify you can call 419-691-2900.
