WOOD COUNTY (WTOL) - It's entire population wouldn't fill a quarter of the Fifth Third Field, but the Pemberville area is now home to some of Wood County's best schools.

Nestled in the center of a quiet rural town, Luckey Elementary is doing big things in education. "We try really hard. We try and motivate and encourage the students to do their best," said Mary Selzer.

This school is part of the Eastwood Local School District that has been rated "excellent with distinction" by the state for two years in a row. That means it has managed to reach the highest level of achievement and stay there. So, what is their secret?

The kids aren't toiling through long school days, and the homework load is pretty average.

The superintendent told us formula for success boils down to teacher teamwork taking place outside of the classroom. While substitutes hold the fort, the teachers meet for a few times out of the school year to come up with teaching techniques. "We all think that you need to bring in some big speaker to motivate, talk to your staff. But the best thing we can do is just put teachers together, let them work, let them meet and share best practices," said Superintendent Brent Walker.

Then they bring those techniques back to the kids. "Because we are more targeted, so they understand exactly what is expected of them," he said.

So the Eastwood magic formula is pretty simple. Put education first, and success will follow. "It's the only secret I know," one teacher told us.
