Waterville teen dies in single-vehicle crash

LUCAS COUNTY (WTOL) - A crash early Sunday morning, August 23 claimed the life of a teen in western Lucas County. The State Highway Patrol says 19 year-old Jacob Childers of Waterville died when he struck a tree.

It happened on Monclova Road between State Route 295 and Whitehouse-Spencer Road.

Neighbor Linda Gill heard the crash. She and a neighbor put out the flames on Chiders' car. Gill says she won't soon forget the emotional scene. "We got the door open enough to feel for his pulse, and he didn't have one," she said.

The State Highway Patrol doesn't yet know what caused Childers to run off the road and into the tree. He was not wearing a seat belt and may have been speeding.
