TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Folks gathered for a fundraiser Saturday night to help a Point Place family who recently had a traumatic brush with death.
In the early morning hours of May 24, Richard Carr burst in the Murphy's Point Place home. He claimed the Murphys had killed his family and he wanted to kill them.
Carr opened fire on the family, hitting Janet Murphy and her son Eric. John Murphy was wounded the worst.
"This was out of the blue. Because we never had a conflict with him," said John Murphy. "Nice guy. I did tell him I forgave him for what he did because I know he didn't do it, but the mental illness that did."
Police arrived, shot Carr once in the head, leaving him dead at the scene.
Eric Murphy sees his dad as, "My hero. He was before and definitely is now. He took a lot."
Eric now suggests people "change the way you do things. Change the way you look at stuff. Life is short. If you want something, I suggest you do it because who knows what happens next."
Money raised will help Janet and Eric.
Janet's insurance coverage doesn't include short term disability. Eric has no insurance because he's unemployed.
For now, after this violent attack, the three Murphys are all on the road to recovery.
