Archbold workers get news their plant will close

ARCHBOLD (WTOL) - Pink slips are flying in Fulton County, many of them landing on workers at Nobel Automotive, a supplier plant on South Defiance St.

Workers have been told 75 of them will be laid off July 15. The remaining 65 will be phased out when the plant closes its doors Sept. 30.

Nobel Automotive makes dipsticks, HVAC and transmission components for Ford, Chrysler and GM. Some say Chrysler has decided to get their parts from Costa Rica.

In fact, Laura Fulton thinks Chrysler will be paying for the Costa Rican-made parts with bailout money.

"They are going to take our money, stick it in their pockets and they're going to run."

Fulton, in the first wave of layoffs, says she doesn't know what she'll do next. The job loss will affect her whole family.

"A lot of people have 30 years or 20 years in. What are we going to do now when there's no jobs out there?" she said.

The director of operations for Nobel Automotive tells News 11 the company is fighting to change minds and keep the jobs here.

"Our hearts go out to the excellent work force and their families that are part of Nobel. Nobel Automotive has a strong desire to find a way to remain in Northwest Ohio where our workforce remains second to none," he said.

Glenn Small lost his job when ITT Cooper Standard closed in February.

"I wish them all the luck in the world because I have sent out over 120 resumes since January. And people don't always go for the experience."

Archbold's mayor says this latest plant closing will hurt the village financially.

"Our income tax comes from payroll, from workers like these. Our numbers have been way down this year and this is the third consecutive year," said Mayor Jim Wyse.

The company would not comment on possible severance pay for the workers.
