MIAMI (AP) - Federal authorities say a Haitian man faces human smuggling charges for piloting a boat overloaded with migrants thatcapsized off Florida's coast, killing at least nine people.Authorities say in an arrest affidavit that Jimmy Metellus wasallowed to make the trip from Haiti to the U.S. for free in exchange for piloting the boat. The affidavit says he planned toabandon the boat once it reached Miami.
Metellus was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday in West PalmBeach. Court documents did not list a lawyer.Metellus was among 16 people rescued when the boat capsizedearly Wednesday off Boynton Beach, 60 miles north of Miami. U.S.policy calls for most of the survivors to be returned home toHaiti. The boat has not been found and the search for victims has ended.
