TOLEDO (WTOL) - For many people with special needs, gaining independence isn't easy.

But, a program for local high school students is giving participants a chance to gain work skills and to be on their own.

Project Search pairs special needs students with unpaid internships at University of Toledo and businesses in the area.

Monica Decair is one of a select group of local high school seniors chosen to get work experience before she even graduates. (See attached video for full report.)

Each rotation lasts a few months, and the assignments are designed to complement each participant's strengths and interests.

This is the second year for Project Search, and Coordinator Amanda Ratliff says the program is helping people involved become "more independent and more helpful."
