SANDUSKY (WTOL) - Now you know: Taking a green vacation is possible right here in our area.

That's right. Sustainable fun is taking center stage at Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky, which is in the national spotlight for its eco-friendly message.

"We are extremely excited to be the nation's first -- and only -- hotel chain that's 100 percent green seal certified," said Matt Lawrence.

The certification is the result of many months of planning and starts with a green educated staff and commitment to conservation.

The organic program in the hotel restaurants is a novel idea. Composting organic waste has shown a 21 percent reduction in garbage sent to the landfill.

"With our organic program, we separate all the food waste, anything that would be compostable, into our yellow garbage can here," Lawrence said. "Our containers are made of biodegradable sugar cane fiber instead of styrofoam, and so these are fully compostable."

The green living continues from where you eat to the room you sleep in.

"We ask the guest to... recycle as well and we make it real easy for them so we have instructions right on the front here what goes in the bin."

The rooms also contain fluorescent lights, efficient showerheads and options to reuse your towels and bedding.

"Through Project Green Wolf, we are also able to recognize and reuse 80 to 90 percent of the water that is running through here right now."
