Sydney police rescue alleged burglar from steep, wet factory roof

SYDNEY (AP) - Australian police say they've nabbed a suspected burglar after a three-hour operation to rescue him from the roof ofthe building he was trying to break into.

State police in New South Wales say they were called to a factory this morning where the 53-year-old man was stuck, apparently unable to move because of wet weather and the roof's steep pitch.

Emergency crews made a number of rescue attempts. They finally succeeded using fire truck with a tall ladder while a helicopter hovered overhead shining light on the roof.

Police arrested the man and charged him with trespassing, possession of housebreaking implements and attempted breaking-and-entering. He was carrying a helmet with a light, boltcutters, a small ladder, backpack, tarpaulin, ropes and harnesses.
