SYLVANIA (WTOL) - While neighbors on Sheringham slept, thieves broke into their cars and a home surveillance camera was rolling the whole time.
They don't need equipment. The thieves just try car doors until one opens, then it's open season. Detective Frederick Schnoor calls it car shopping. "They go through cars looking for iPods, radios, personal items," he says.
It happens every year when the weather breaks.
Nick Carl says he got a good look at one of them when they shopped his truck. "I heard someone going through my truck at a quarter to four in the morning. He was looking through my cell phone in my truck, and I ran out the door after him."
Since then, Carl got two big dogs and a security system, but police say many are forgetting to do one thing. "Locking your car is the best line of defense," says Schnoor.
