Murder-suicide reported at Dearborn community college

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Police have identified a Michigan community college student shot to death on the school's campus and her assailant who apparently committed suicide.

Police discovered the bodies of 20-year-old Asia McGowan of Ecorse and 28-year-old Anthony Powell of Detroit in a MacKenzie Fine Arts Center room at Henry Ford Community College about 12:30 p.m. today.

The school is in Dearborn, just south of Detroit.

Police say Powell apparently used a shotgun to kill McGowan and then turned the gun on himself.

They took at least one class together -- a theater course that had met earlier today.

The campus was placed on lockdown after reports of gunfire. A school official says the college successfully used its campus-wide e-mail and cell phone alert system.
