Families Coping: Ruiz kids thriving despite financial challenges

TOLEDO (WTOL) - Jeanne and Abelino Ruiz wish their son Abelino, Jr., (AJ) well during a recent spelling bee competition. Mom and dad proudly watch their eldest son break down words into their simplest elements.

And, when it comes to their kids, Jeanne and Abelino keep the financial situation simple, too.

"They have an idea, but we try not to let them feel like they're suffering in any way," Jeanne said.

Jenna, Adrianna and Angela all share a bedroom, while AJ has a room upstairs. He plays his music among the Batman bedding and walls. And like a superhero, AJ decided to step in and help while his mom and dad look for work.

"I never had money to buy my own stuff. They've always bought my shoes and clothes and stuff I needed, but I wanted to buy video games and other stuff," so he created A+ Pet Care, offering pet sitting, walking and bathing services -- and homemade treats.

AJ says the business idea was basically spelled out for him at a time when the economy is not.
