Monroe officer takes own life

MONROE, Mich - Officer Gary Fortner was found dead Tuesday morning, March 31, apparently from a self-inflicted gun shot we are told by Monroe police.

The police Department adds that Officer Fortner had been distraught over personal issues, and fellow officers became concerned when he failed to appear for the midnight shift roll call at 11:00 p.m. Officers checked the area and discovered Officer Fortner's body in his parked car at Roessler Field at 12:34 AM.

Monroe Police Chief John Michrina released the following statement:

Officer Fortner was a well liked and respected member of the Monroe Police Department where he had served as a police officer since 2001. His loss will be felt by all members of the department. I offer my deepest condolences to Officer Fortner's family and to all those affected by this tragic loss.
