SOUTH TOLEDO (WTOL) - According to a press release by the Toledo Police Department, a suspect was arrested in connection with several arsons in S. Toledo.
Allen Quintanilla, 18, was charged with arson. The arrest occurred at 1:40 a.m. Monday morning at Western and Sumner in south Toledo.
Police say he confessed to numerous residential arsons. We do not yet know for which arsons he has confessed.
News 11's Erica Shaffer says she spoke with this suspect on scene at two previous fires. While reporting live on scene for News 11 Your Morning at 5 and 6 a.m. last week, she interviewed Quintanilla off camera. He did not want to be interviewed on camera. He was on scene of fires both Tuesday and Thursday of last week. Quintanilla was filmed when video footage of the scene scanned the onlookers. Watch the featured video.
At one fire, Quintanilla said he was walking his dog and spotted the fire, so he called 911. News 11 reporters and photojournalists say he walked around the scene as a concerned neighbor telling people they had to stop this guy.
One fire Quintanilla confessed to setting burned down the home of Tonya and Leroy Smith. News 11 interviewed Tonya on the day of the fire. You can see her interview here. The Smiths told us today they were shocked to find out it was the same teen who comforted them as they watched their house go up in flames. "He tried to hug me, but I tried to put my hand up like that," said Tonya, "But he shook my hand and asked, 'Is everything alright?'"
Quintanilla is due in court Tuesday morning, March 31. The Smith family says they plan to be there as well.
