PERRYSBURG (WTOL) - A local company is hiring, and that's big news in Northwest Ohio.

Indeed, Ohio unemployment was at 9.4 percent in February, a 25-year high. The national jobless rate was 8.1 percent last month, the highest in 26 years.

Still, Willard & Kelsey Solar Group on Progress Dr., off of Dixie Highway in Perrysburg, is looking to hire 400 people.

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland appreciates just how important this is to the area. He took a tour of the start-up facility Wednesday afternoon at the site of the former Delafoil plant.

Thanks to a job creation tax credit from the State, the solar cell manufacturer will be able to hire the 400 new employees.

"It has a product that we expect will be hugely successful. ... Hundreds, even thousands, of new jobs will be created to put Ohioans back to work," Strickland said.

Actually, Northwest Ohio is becoming the premier place for solar panel manufacturing. There's First Solar in Perrysburg, Xunlight Corp. in west Toledo and research at the University of Toledo.

This new company is already accepting resumes and hopes to start hiring in August.

"Our overall average salary with benefits is in excess of $60,000 a year," said Bill Mitchell, president Willard & Kelsey Solar Group.

They're looking for technicians and workers for quality control -- with a good work ethic, something Mitchell says he sees in autoworkers.
