Richardson died of blunt impact, says medical examiner

NEW YORK (AP) - An autopsy shows actress Natasha Richardson died of a blow to the head suffered in a skiing accident.

A spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office says Richardson suffered a traumatic brain injury known as an epidural hematoma. Richardson was injured while taking a private lesson on a beginners slope at a ski resort about 80 miles northwest of Montreal.

Meanwhile, the director of operations at the emergency services company that sent the medics to the resort has told The Globe and Mail newspaper that ski patrollers requested an ambulance after Richardson fell. But when the paramedics responded, they were told they were not needed.

Doctors say patients with brain injuries sometimes have what's called a "lucid interval" where they act fine for an hour or more as the brain slowly, silently swells or bleeds.
