Springfield teen gets new heart

(WTOL) - It took more than ten hours, but a Springfield Township teenager now has a new heart.

Alexandra Courville had a hole in her heart at birth and it was damaged by a bad surgery.

She was on the waiting list for a heart and got the call early Monday morning that one had been found.

Except for some bleeding, the surgery was a success and Alexandra's family was able to see her late last night.

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP (WTOL) - "I just hope I get a new heart, and everything is ok... nothing goes wrong." At 13, that's the only wish Alexandra Courville has.

That's what Alexandra told News 11's Melissa Voetsch when we profiled her on November 14. You can view that report: Local teen is waiting for a new heart. She has been waiting for a new heart due to a congenital heart defect. Born on January 1, 1995, Ally was diagnosed with Ischemic Cardiomyopathy, and doctors at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio recommended a life-saving heart transplant.

We then updated Alexandra's condition on November 20. She was hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic because her condition had deteriorated. Doctors put her on medicine to keep her heart beating until a donor heart could be found. View that report: Springfield teen waiting for heart is hospitalized.

She got her wish. On Monday, November 24, Alexandra went into surgery for a heart transplant.

Alexandra's Website

The Children's Organ Transplant Association has put together a web site for Alexandra. With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant patients are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients.

We'll update you on how the surgery went as soon as we hear from the family.
