(WTOL) -- The countdown to Christmas is on. It's just 30 days away. Many people will start their shopping this Friday, but the bad economy means fewer choices because of tighter inventories.
The sights and sounds of the holiday season make you feel good; they put you in the mood for giving. But first, you have get through long lines.
Shopper Mariah Vollmer hates "The lines, crazy lines" on Black Friday.
"People get pushed and shoved," Mae Womack said.
Even with all the madness, many will go to the stores early on Black Friday, they just can't pass it up.
"You got to do it," Vollmer said.
Shopper Peter Miller says he goes out "Just for the great deals."
But experts say, don't expect the shelves to hold as much as past years.
With shoppers expected to spend 3.2 percent less than last year, retailers can't afford not to discount some items but they won't be as deep and plentiful.
Bargain hunters should do their research before heading out.
On most of these sites, you'll find a list of items in the circular, discussions about how prices compare and in some cases how products perform.
Shoppers should make a list of the items they want to buy from each store.
Sites like Gottadeal.com will let you select sale items and track the lowest prices for you.
"Radio Shack, I'll be there in the morning and I'll be at Wal-mart," bargain hunter Mae Womack said. "I did my research."
Don't let the the hype blind you to so-so sales. Narrow your list and use price comparision engines like Pricegrabber.com or Bizrate.com, also compare circulars so you get what you really want--savings.
"With the economy today everybody is looking for a good deal things are tight," said Mariah Vollmer.
Search online for in-store coupons to sweeten these deals and don't camp out if you don't have too. Some stores are offering door buster deals online on Friday morning and Thanksgiving.
