Elmore's our first stop in our Hometown for the Holidays series. Cool! Chrys and Jerry will be there tomorrow. Tonight, here's a preview by Joe Stoll.
ELMORE, OH (WTOL) - Sometimes folks pick up and move because of a job or family, and that's not any different for the people of Elmore.
However, many of them end up returning home. And it doesn't matter who you ask, they'll say the best part about this town of nearly 1,500 is the people.
"They're just a big, big family. The whole town is," said resident Earl Avers.
Rick Claar agrees. "When you walk down the street, everybody yells and says hi and they wave to you, and it's just a friendly little village."
Elmore hit the map in 1851. The railroad gave it steam. The old train depot's been refurbished, but the original seats and the ticket window still exist.
Another staple is Tank's Meats, which opened 102 years ago and is surviving the economy. They butcher their own meats and employ nearly 30 people.
The owner says there's never a dull moment.
"You know, some people have this attitude about small towns and everything, but as far as I'm concerned, small towns are great," said Mary Amstutz.
The largest employer in Elmore is Brush Wellman.
Besides work, Elmore residents have fun. And, to find out about one aspect of that fun -- motorized casket racing -- click the attached video (will be up around 6 p.m.). And smile. We know you will.
